Make Your Own Spanish Moss Ball for Free
In the spring I created this display for a dresser top in my formal living room.
For my guest post at The CSI Project, I switched my living room décor to a beach theme for the summer. I kept the silver tray and changed the accessories, changed the pottery piece to a similar one in blue, and changed the candle in the holder to blue.
The moss ball that I used in spring was the perfect size, it just barely fit into the container. A green moss ball wouldn’t do for my beach theme, so I had to improvise.
My first thought was to glue Spanish Moss to a styrofoam ball but the ball that I had was way too small and even covered in moss wouldn’t be big enough to show in my container. I thought and thought and came up with a free solution.
I took an old tennis ball and wrapped it in used tissue paper that I saved from Christmas.
A little tape holds the tissue paper in place.
Then I glued Spanish Moss from my craft stash to the tissue paper.
Using hot glue would be a lot easier but I didn’t think about that until it was too late. A rubber band held the Spanish Moss in place while it dried.
After it dried, I inserted my new moss ball into my pottery piece and it fit perfectly. I didn’t cover the bottom of the ball with Spanish moss because it isn’t seen.
I love a free solution to a crafting dilemma!
Very smart girl you are! You’re right–the Spanish moss is just the right color for your beachy scene. And the trees around Southern beaches (e.g. Kiawah, Sea Island) are just laden with Spanish moss, so this works perfectly!
Clever and creative, Paula! I am going to try this! I love how you decorate this dresser!!

Gotta make one of these for a larger pot I have that would be pretty this fall. Thanks for the idea.
I love your beachy scene.
What a great idea, I love it!
You are sure clever coming up with that. Don’t you just love making something for nothing. It fits in well with your beach theme.
I have that Bobsey Twins book, but mine doesn’t have the cute beach cover…darn.
So pretty! Love the improv. Thanks for sharing.
I love cheap and easy crafts! Looks great!
That looks so good! You did a great job. I love the new beachy theme!
It looks great! What a fab idea! And if you ever want to you can peel it all off and still use the tennis ball!
How clever to use a tennis ball. 🙂 Gotta love free and easy crafts!
