Preparing for a New School Year
I’ve been hard at work in my new classroom. After teaching 7th grade for 23 years, I’m moving to 6th grade which requires a room change. Switching classrooms is very similar to moving from one house to another. At the end of the school year, I packed my things in preparation for the move. The move was made a bit more challenging as the teacher who was in my new room last year did not clean out the drawers or cabinets when she left. I spent a day cleaning out cabinets and drawers, scrubbing everything down, and then had to sort through the goodies left for me. There was quite a bit of trash but also supplies that I will need for the coming school year.
Plastic bags, tissues, pens, and hand sanitizer are in constant use in a classroom. I’m thankful that I won’t have to worry about purchasing any of these this year. All of this was left behind by the previous teacher!
The boxes are unpacked and my things are put away. I’ve started decorating and hope to finish soon. It’s a load off of my mind to get this much accomplished before the start of school. I’ll go back another day to do more decorating.

More of My Classroom
I am so lucky to have all of this storage space in my room. I’ll decorate the cabinet doors and the wall under the cabinets to make these areas visually stimulating for my students.
Have you started getting ready for back to school? It’s already here in some areas.
Thanks to Great Clips for sponsoring this post.
I think my blood pressure spiked when I read about your classroom/grade level move! When we moved to Roanoke, I also had to move all my school stuff. Then I changed classrooms three times – honest! – in four years. When I retired, I gave my school supplies to the team and left my files organized by SOL’s.Your room looks a lot like my last room. It was great with all that storage, plus I had a huge closet. (My teammate and I had a microwave and fridge in there. We spent way too much time there before and after school hours.) I hope you have a great year.
Thank you! You were nice to leave your things organized for the next teacher. I can’t believe I only have two more weeks of summer!

Wow! That is a pretty great make over for those classes. I think it is a shame that teachers have to spend so much of their own money to ensure that the students have what they need. It just isn’t right. Your room is taking great shape too. I’m going to send this to my daughter so she can enter. Even in 1st grade there are so many supplies.
I’m preparing to homeschool Shelley her last two years in HS and I can’t wait!!! When does school start in Virginia?
It varies, Ricki Jill. We have a “Kings Dominion” law that prevents schools from starting before Labor Day. If a school district gets a certain amount of snow, they can apply for a waiver to start earlier. My county gets the waiver and we start August 18. I got back August 11 and will admit that I am NOT ready for summer to be over.
Good luck with homeschooling. I know you’ll do a great job.

Hey Paula!
What a GREAT classroom and yay for the leftover supplies! I just went and registered my kiddos for their Homeschool tutorial and college dual enrollment classes yesterday. I can’t believe I have a freshman and a senior! I hope you have a great school year! I know the students are going to learn lots from you!!!!
Blessings,
Beth
Aw, I love seeing your classroom! It looks great! Were you in your other classroom for a long time? I could definitely see how big a move that could be! It definitely seems annoying yet also rewarding that the other teacher left so much behind. Good that there were supplies but bad that it was a mess! I love the bright blue walls!
I was in my other classroom for at least ten year, maybe longer! I also like the bright wall. We aren’t allowed to paint the walls now, so I’m glad that one of the previous teachers did it for me.

It must be so hard to change classrooms. Almost like moving your house around. Thanks for sharing about Great Clips and rewarding deserving teachers. Very inspiring, Paula.
It is like moving from one house to another! The good thing about it is it gave me the opportunity to really go through my things and pair down to exactly what I really need.

Exciting change Paula! Lots of work but usually the best things are right?! 😉 P.S. I always take our girls to Great Clips for their trims. They do a great job here in South Tampa.
Happy Back-to-School…
It’s fun to see where you will be spending your days, Paula! At least moving gives you a chance to clean everything out get organized, right? Enjoy the rest of your time off 🙂
Wow! You have a great space to work with! I used to teach 6th grade. I loved it! They are going to love you! Looking good! Smart to do a little here and there! ~Christy
Good luck with the new grade level! I am very familiar with packing up rooms and moving rooms. You’re so right…it’s like moving homes. You’ve got a great head start on getting the room ready for the new school year. I know it feels good to get that done. And how nice of Great Clips to be supporting students and teachers!
Your classroom looks awesome! So nice of Great Clips to offer this!
Live how you’ve whipped your classroom into shape Paula!! Love Sharpies!
