Pottery Barn Inspired Media Console Makeover
It’s time for another Themed Furniture Makeover and this month’s theme is Pottery Barn knockoff.
I’ll have to admit that this theme was a tough one for me. I spent a lot of time on Pottery Barn’s website waiting for inspiration to strike and then I saw this: the Bowry Reclaimed Wood Media Console.
And I remembered this media console that Mr. SP made back in 2004 for our first flat screen tv:
After we purchased this made in Vermont beauty in 2011, Mr. SP’s handiwork was relegated to the basement where it’s been used for storage.
Originally stained a honey color, this piece faded over time. The top is made from oak flooring and because I’ve used the piece for storage, it has taken some abuse with light scratches and a few water marks.
The makeover started with a light sanding of the doors, top, and sides. After sanding, I applied two coats of General Finishes Brown Mahogany Gel Stain and then sealed the piece with General Finishes High Performance Top Coat. (affiliate links) I first used these two products on an Ikea hack where I transformed an Ikea Rast chest into a patriotic one. I can’t emphasize enough how much I have enjoyed the performance of these two products.
The small feet that Mr. SP originally added to the dresser at the last minute were replace by bun feet purchased from Lowe’s. I liked the original hinges on the door and the knobs, so they stayed as is.
The radio on the left belonged to my grandmother and it still works. The one on the right was purchased last summer at my neighbor’s yard sale for a few dollars.
Doesn’t the top of this media console look pretty now?
This piece will go back to the basement until I have a place to use it or until my mom and I open a shop. (We are working on that.)
This makeover cost just $12, the price of the four bun feet since I already had the media cabinet and the supplies to stain it.
It honestly was 100% fun to give this piece a new look with stain. The icing on the cake was when Mr. SP saw the final product and said, “You made this go from looking like a homemade piece of crap to fine furniture.” I’ll take that kind of end result!
Now for the fun part! Go visit my friends to see how Pottery Barn inspired them this month.

Ooh…it’s rustic and so much better than that light pine! Great job recreating the PB style, Paula. 🙂
Thanks, Larissa. I like it so much better with the darker stain. Now I just need a place to use it or a place to sell it.

This turned out beautifully! I love it! Once again mad building skills! I love those older radios on top too.
I love the stain color, so rich and pretty! Thanks for visiting!!
Thanks, Kimm. I once considered painting this piece and am now glad that I stained it instead.
Paula
You definitely gave this piece so much character and the rich color is spot on to the PB inspiration. Have to laugh at Mr. SP’s comment, so funny!

Thanks, Tami. I love the new color on this piece and was really happy when my husband liked it as well.

That is such a sweet piece! I love it even more since Mr SP made it for you:) I must trythe General Finishes products too..they seem to be so popular!
You should try General Finishes, Wendi. I’ve discovered a store in my town that sells their products, so I know I’ll be using more of it in the future.

What a great piece. I love it with the new stain color. Really gives it character and warmth! Well done!
Thanks, Christy! I was really pleased with the end result. As a final touch, I still need to stain the inside of the doors.

Paula this is beautiful!! The new stain color is perfection!
Thanks, Bre! I am really happy with how this turned out.

Well, Mr. SP was right. It does look like a fine piece of furniture! And those antique radios are awesome! Love it. Have a great weekend!
Thanks, Angie! The larger radio still works if you can believe that. My grandmother gave it to me a long time ago and I’ve had it on display ever since.
Paula
This turned out gorgeous, Paula! Love the change of the bun feet. Something tells me this won’t be banished to the basement anymore! 🙂
Thank you, Christy! Right now it is sitting in the middle of the workroom. I need to get Mr. SP to help me to move it.
I’m looking forward to seeing your new floors!
Paula
That’s a real beauty now Paula!! Love the feet! 🙂
