Burlap Table Runner

Picture this….Virginia Tech…1989…a young co-ed pulls an almost all-nighter sewing by hand an Indian costume for Halloween.

Does, “Picture This”, make you think of the Golden Girls?

The costume has been worn several times over the years. The hand sewing worked like a charm!

Being that the college student was an elementary education major, she kept all of the burlap scraps, “just in case”, she ever needed them.

Back to 2009….Burlap is big! I see it everywhere and am dying to make something. I go to my fabric stash and low and behold, there are my 1989 scraps, tucked away, “just in case”, and wouldn’t you know it, one scrap was perfect for a table runner.

I stenciled a monogram on either end and used iron-on hemming tape to add chocolate brown ribbon to all of the sides.

I’m so glad that I saved those scraps back in 1989!

  1. Great table runner! It didn’t cost you anything either, which is even better. I love the costume, too.

  2. Love the table runner….and you’re a fellow HOKIE! What about that. I was a few years before you, but a proud graduate of Pamplin’s College of Business at VA TECH!!

  3. I love that table runner!! I am wanting to do something like that, but every year have my kids do “hand turkeys” on it.
I think I may try yours, too!
By the way, when I taught school, I had TONS of stuff saved like that. When I quit I gave it all away! 🙁

  4. Cute – love your indian look — Just thought I’d let you know that I’ve got some “Virginia Is For Lovers” glasses on my give-a-way for my 100th post — come on over if you’re interested!

  8. Love it – great idea! The monogram really makes it look “classy”. I love burlap myself – I seem to be finding all kinds of uses for it these days. Thanks for sharing such a great idea.

  10. I can relate to your “educator majors save everything” comment. I am still finding things that I saved 6-10 years ago for my students.

    Super cute runner!

  11. I saw your post from A Soft Place to Land. It caught my eye because today I just posted a couple of burlap ideas on my blog. One was a table runner. IF you get a chance, check them out. Nice job–on both counts!
