DIY Cupcake Stand
It’s been a while since Mr. SP and I have had time to complete a project together in the workshop. This weekend we spent a few hours crafting a project that I’ve had on my mind for several years, a DIY cupcake stand.
I like cupcakes because they are pretty and they don’t require serving.
Guests at a party can grab a cupcake and enjoy!
Now that I have a cupcake stand, my cupcakes can also serve as a table centerpiece when I have a party.
Mr. SP and I completed this project in just a few hours. To be honest, it took about as long to bake and decorate the cupcakes as it did to make my cupcake stand!
DIY Cupcake Stand
We wanted our cupcake stand to have three tiers with columns in between.
We used a board leftover from another project to form the three tiers of the cupcake stand.
If you want to make a cupcake stand but don’t want to cut out three circles, I’m sure you can buy various sizes of wooden circles at a craft shop. After tracing each circle on a piece of wood, I used the band saw to cut them out.
My circles have diameters of 16”, 10”, and 5”. After cutting them out, they were sanded until smooth.
The support columns for the cupcake stand were cut in 4” pieces from a 1 1/2” wooden dowel.
The center of each circle was marked and I used my new BLACK+DECKER AutoSense Drill to drill a hole through each.
There are many features about my new drill that I really like.
I immediately was impressed with its lightweight design. Other drills can be too heavy for me to hold for long periods of time, particularly if I have to hold the drill above chest height. Not this one! At 2.6 lbs, I will be able to use this drill anywhere.
The LED light on top lets you know if you are in drill or drive mode.
Attaching the columns to the tiers was the next step.
After deciding the position of the three columns that will connect the bottom and middle tiers, they were traced with a pencil. Pilot holes were drilled in the center of each traced circle.
Deck screws were used to attach the columns to the tiers.
To attach the top tier to the middle tier, the second tier was flipped over and a long drill bit was used to screw in between the three columns.
The last step was to attach the bottom tier to the middle one.
A great thing about this drill is that it has an AutoSense stop feature. A microprocessor inside the drill stops screws flush with the wood. This is great for a novice like me who can easily drive a screw in too far. If you want to countersink a screw, you can easily do it by pulling the trigger after the drill stops on its own.
After covering the screws with wood filler and sanding, I primed the cupcake stand and then gave it a coat of white paint. The paint I had wasn’t glossy, so I gave it a final coat of gloss spray paint.
Not only is this DIY cupcake stand great for displaying cupcakes, but it also can be used in home decor.
I would love to win the drill! I would use it to work on a bird house for the back yard.
I would use this all over my house instead of my “corded” drill. How easy would that be. I have a huge pantry that I am making over and this would really make that job so much easier. Love your blog and all that you share.
Thank you.
Sally
You are so talented!!! I am very impressed. There are so many things around the house that I could use a drill for. I have lots of pictures that need to be hung and because of the material used in our walls, we always need to drill a hole for the nail with a drill instead of using a plain hammer and a nail. The kids always seem to be getting various things (bikes, swingsets, etc.) that require assembly. With my husband’s work schedule, I always seem to be the one to assemble everything. A drill sure would make this easier.
I look forward to seeing more of your projects. They are great!
As a “handyman” I have found that a cordless drill is probably one of the most useful tools that a person can have. I would use it for many things , constructing birdhouses, bookshelves, toychest for my grandkids, put together items that have a lot of screws, etc. As you can see, this tool can be used for many things and I would love to have the one shown.
Thanks
Jerry
I would love to have this drill. Thinking of all the many projects that I could tackle with this.
This is the absolute coolest drill i have ever seen…I need one! I use my current drill a lot and it would be nice to have one this awesome. Love that cupcake stand as well. 🙂
that should say drills I (I need to proofread before I post!)
Where is this awesome work shop of yours?!? In the garage? I’m seriously jealous!!! Okay, I want to win because I love power tools 🙂
This is awesome! Love the stand you did a fantastic job! I am so jealous I need a new drill so bad!
Wow, I have to check out that drill. I use a drill almost daily and this one looks like it has some awesome features. The cupcakes look yummy and your photo’s are beautiful!
Sorry, forgot to tell you how I would use the drill. I would use mine for making furniture repairs!
I would definitely put that drill to good use all over the place! Now if you’ll excuse me, I suddenly got the urge to make cupcakes 🙂
Paula! I am so impressed with your mad drilling skills! The cupcake stand looks awesome! If I won the drill, I’d use it as an excuse to get my hubby to teach me how to actually use it, lol! Thanks for sharing!
~Abby =)
Oops! I forget to tell you how cute your stand turned out! XO
Turned out great! Amazing what you can accomplish with the right tools!
Blessings,
Cindy
So cute!!! I am inspired!! Would love to win the drill!!
Nancy
Since my hubby is the driller in the family, I’d give this to him! 😉
Paula, what a great drill and a darling Cupcake stand. Your talents are so inspiring. Thanks for the giveaway. Crossing my fingers…
I would love this drill, because it would be MINE and by husband would not be standing over me when I use it. He is not good at sharing his drill. The first thing I’d like to make with it would be the cupcake stand.
Married to a man who owns a commercial construction company, I have NO tools at home or of my own. It is SO very hard to get projects completed at home. I would SO love this to get my pintrest envy list completed!!
Love that cupcake stand! I think I might make one, too. It would be so much easier with a drill like yours!
I love that cupcake stand so much! I would love to make a bench for our tiny entry way before winter gets here. I hate people walking on the carpet with their yucky shoes. This drill would help so much.
I like that it seems to be a more girl-friendly drill. And your cupcake stand is so cute. U could decorate it differently for each season.
It looks like a drill I could use myself without having to bother my hubby (or wait around on him)
I love the cupcake stand – good job Paula !!
Love the cupcake stand! Well done! I could use a drill as I’m building up my tool collection. I’d love to build a bench for foyer.
I would either rig it up as a motor on a remote controled Lilliputian scale seagoing vessel, or I’d use it to drill holes and tighten/loosen screws. 😉
I would use this drill to do my never ending DIY projects I get myself in to. : ) Starting with this OH SO CUTE stand!! GREAT job!!
Paula,
I just love this project! I so want one!!!! Sharing and showing to my honey! ~Christy
Sounds perfect for many projects actuslly I need a cupcake stand for bake sales.
Wow Paula! You make this project look so easy. I would love to be able to construct basic projects such as a screech owl house! OR your cupcake plate. Cute!
Love your cupcake stand! We used to have a drill but it is lost in the garage somewhere (and it was super heavy anyway). I would love a lightweight drill like this one!
This looks like a perfect drill for my workshop! Would love to win the 20V Li-power!
This is a great project and I love the drill. I would use it to make these wall hanging art project I’ve been wanting to do. Thanks so much
Vanessa
My hubby would love this as hes always working on different projects the newest one is building a tree house lol thanks for such lovely giveaway n God bless u!!
Paula….really like the cupcake stand…but LOVE the drill 😉 I started a company about 18 mo ago. We do infrastructure work in hospitals and are always drilling into a variety of surfaces at different depths. My old drill “walked away” on the last job….so I could definitely use this drill as a replacement and “step up”. Good luck w future projects. ..you are one talented and busy lady!
We would use it for the many projects being worked on. The drill I am using now is quite worn out and I just can’t bring myself to buy a new one till its dead. Nice stand may make something similar soon.
If I won the drill I would be giving it to my husband to do all of these projects that needed to be completed around our house! Paula I love the cupcake stand! I don’t know how you have time for all that you do!!
Hi! I’m impressed with your building skills!! I would use this drill to put an organizer together within my closet. It’s a job I’ve been putting off. lol Thank-you for this generous giveaway!!
Love this! I would use it to make this DIY cupcake stand. 🙂
My hubby would love this! He’s in desperate need of a new drill, his battery died last weekend when we were in the middle of installing a ceiling fan. We are hoping soon to start a new project, making a self watering area and starting a garden. He definitely needs a drill for that! 🙂
to build a new toy chest for my son..
Your cupcake stand is wonderful, Paula! I love it the way you have it styled here with the baker’s twine adding a fun touch.
The idea of a lightweight drill sounds awesome to me! Our only drill is a very heavy Makita–fine for Jack to use, but cumbersome for me. I’d love to have a drill for myself!
What a beautiful cupcake stand! I love it! Major props for designing it all on your own. The drill seems like such a good tool with all of its special features. I love that it tells you so many helpful things. I would love my drill to help me out more. Sometimes I get a little crazy with mine…like when I accidentally snapped off a drill bit into the wall. Sigh. Wish it could have told me to stop!
Could really use the drill
Mine just broke last weekend
I have lots of craft projects to use this on.
Making bird houses, mounting signs to shovels and rakes, etc…
Thank you for the chance to win!
Love your cupcake stand – what a great idea!! Thanks for sharing at Monday Funday Link Party – pinned and tweeted!! Can’t wait to see you at Haven…you are going right??? xo Heather
I’d make a wood tray for my new dresser/
I’m always in need of a drill! Thank you so much for the opportunity!
suzy
Oh my goodness, love what you made! We had the best drill ever from B&D but the hubby’s tool bag was stollen so we are slowly trying to replace everything, this would be perfect timing! thanks for the chance
XO
I would use this drill for around the house projects!
This is an impressive project. I would do all sorts of house projects with the drill. My husband doesn’t like me touching his tools. 🙂
Good work on the cake stand. Is it very heavy? Would love to have a drill of my own instead of stealing my husband’s. Will come in handy as we continue building our deck and patio. Thanks for the opportunity.
Christine,
The drill is so light! I know I could drill over my head without getting tired. Thanks for entering!
Paula
LOVE the cake stand! I would use the drill to make some really fun crafts that I usually can’t make with just scissors!
I love this project! Now I just need to get hubby to get a band saw 😉 I would love to be able to give him this drill as an anniversary present though <3
Not even sure where to start on how I would use this drill! I know that it would come in handy in building a new table!
Oh I know exactly what I would do with this- give it to my dear husband who has no power tools! He’s been wanting tools for so long but they aren’t in the budget. Thanks for this chance!
What a cool drill! There are so many DIY projects that could be created with this drill. If your a novice (like I am) this drill would make your projects so much easier!
Actually with a drill that light weight, that opens up a slew of craft projects. I could finally replace the bird houses in our front yard.
We have a squadron of sparrows that could use new homes!
This would be great to do repairs and crafts with my 6 year old grandson. …. we have a long list and the hubs is great but just not the handyman type…but I love it….
You had me at “lightweight”! My husband is like so many others and “prefers” that I not use his drill. Now that I am entering retirement age, I would enjoy my own tools for lots of crafting ideas I have. I would love to start with the cupcake stand. With 5 grandchildren around, it would come in handy for parties! 🙂
Love the cupcake stand! My husband and I are currently renovating our kitchen. He works 56 hours weekly so that doesn’t leave much time to work on kitchen. He owns a ‘heavy’ driver, but if I had this lightweight handy dandy combo I could do so much more while he was at work! Once kitchen is done then it is on to dining room and then converting a small bedroom into a beautiful dressing/closet space where there will be lots of new Rta storage pieces to be put together 🙂 Yes, I need this B&D cordless drill combo!!
I LOVE your cupcake stand and would LOVE this drill the make a cupcake stand like yours as a gift for my daughter and so many other fun projects. Planning a new bench for my backyard and the drill would be perfect to put it together.
This drill would sooooo come in handy! I have a small drill…..but have to use my husband’s larger drill when I need more umph, and it is very heavy for me. Would be great to get the job done without having to get my Hubby’s beast to finish the job!
That drill looks awesome!! Hubs and I both have orthopedic issues that prevent us from doing a lot of what we used to do. The heaviness of his old power tools is part of the problem. This would be fabulous for everything from putting up new cabinet knobs to building the piece I want in the mudroom.
We are remodeling our kitchen and bathroom. This handy dandy drill would be a wonderful asset as we are doing the work ourselves.
I’d tackle the list of DIY projects I have
If I won, I’d give this to my husband, and have him use it in finishing his garage re-organization project. I know the one he has isn’t working very well.
Hi Paula. I said I love this stand so much. Well, it’s my week to pick the feature for Fearlessly Creative Mammas link party and this is my pick! Thank you for linking up and being supportive. Hope to see you on Tips and Tricks again soon.
This drill would come in so handy for my master closet makeover! 🙂
This would be great as we are getting ready to build a deck in our backyard
Right now I only have a corded drill that I lug all over the house with a very long extension cord. I have such a long list of things to do this summer it is unbelievable. This sounds like a great drill that would save me time and energy.
We are getting our house ready to sell, so I could put this drill to good use from trim work to mini blinds. Thanks for the chance to win.
If I won this, I’d give it to my husband. He’s got plenty of projects he could use it for!
I love your cupcake stand! We could use a new drill, I have a bench I have been wanting to make forever this would be great 🙂
xo, Tanya
I would use it to make projects with my niece!
I would love to use this to make a cute tables set for my kids
I would make some wood toys for my boys!
This would help to make all the projects around home a lot easier such as making some planters for the porch !!!!!TY
oh fun!! i need a new drill and this looks awesome! I’d use it to hang all the pictures and wall decor that still need to go up in our new house!
Would love to win the drill, we don’t own one, it would be a handy tool.
What a great job! You cut out some awesome round circles!
I would use this every day!!!
Would use it for building a deck in our backyard
I would use it for my never ending DIY projects that I have half finished.
This drill would very much come in handy right now! We have a room in our house that needs a complete overhaul and there will be plenty of uses for this drill!
I would use the drill to make the cupcake stand just like you did. That is actually how I found the giveaway…I was looking for DIY plans for a cupcake stand for my daughter’s wedding. Would definitely put this drill to good use if I had it. Thanks for doing the giveaway!
While I am grateful for the drill I “inherited”, something from this century may be a bit less cumbersome.
I would use this drill to help with so many home improvement and home decorating projects that I have been meaning to do! 🙂
I would love to win this fantastic drill and I would first of all make a cupcake stand for my daughters baby shower. Thanks!
I would use it to put my TV’s up and mirrors up that I haven’t gotten around to!
My soon to be 10 year old grandson has asked for a new drill. LOL! He has one but it is not a good one, he says. He is now the head of the household since his parents divorce and he takes his responsibilities very seriously, besides the fact that he loves working with wood. Of course, he loves Legos, too!
Visiting From Just a Girl and Her Blog “Get Your DIY On Blog Party”. I love how this sturdy cupcake stand turned out. Such a fun DIY project and it can be used to display so many things. Thanks for sharing.
That is so perfect for a party! I need to make one now! Thanks so much for the inspiration! Pinned
Thank you so much!
