Fall Tablescape with Beautyberry

A fall plant that I love is Beautyberry.  It’s purple berries are so pretty and in September their color starts to peak.  In celebration of fall, I created a Fall Tablescape with Beautyberry.  My table combines my love of traditional fall colors of orange, yellow, and brown with a pop of purple from Beautyberry.Table set for fall with Mikasa Garden Harvest dishes, vintage amber Anchor Hocking glasses, a centerpiece with Beautyberry and Virginia Sweetspire and layered fall colored placemats and chargers.

I am joining Chloe of Celebrate and Decorate for her monthly tablescape blog hop.  Each day this week a group of bloggers are sharing a late summer tablescape.  You’ll find links to today’s participating bloggers and also links for the bloggers participating the rest of this week at the end of this post.

I’m looking forward to tablescape inspiration each day this week as I enjoy the ideas shared each day over my morning coffee.

Fall Tablescape with Beautyberry

I set this table in our breakfast room, a space that was added to our 1958 home in 2009.  We have a formal dining room, but we prefer to entertain guests in our breakfast area since it is a larger space and it overlooks our backyard.Table set for fall with Mikasa Garden Harvest dishes, vintage amber Anchor Hocking glasses, a centerpiece with Beautyberry and Virginia Sweetspire and layered fall colored placemats and chargers.

Setting the Table

My table includes my 1994 wedding casual dishes, vintage glassware and silver, and new chargers and orange placemats paired with placemats that I’ve had for years.Table set for fall with Mikasa Garden Harvest dishes, vintage amber Anchor Hocking glasses, a centerpiece with Beautyberry and Virginia Sweetspire and layered fall colored placemats and chargers.

Place Settings

I still love the Mikasa Garden Harvest dishes that I selected for my 1994 wedding registry.  25 years later, it’s been in constant use in my home.  The Anchor Hocking amber glasses were an estate sale find that we’ve used daily for years.

I layered each dish with burlap chargers from Hobby Lobby, orange placemats from Pier 1, and leaf placemats bought years ago from K-Mart.

The silverware was a Christmas gift to my great-great aunt from my great- great uncle and the Christmas tag in my great-great uncle’s handwriting is still in the box.  This aunt raised my grandmother and was much loved by my dad and aunt. My table has two hidden leaves and when used can seat ten comfortably.  I prefer antique furniture, but went with new when we added this room to our home and needed a table and chair set.  It’s all handmade and our bar stools used at our kitchen counter match.  I have to agree with my husband that new furniture is more comfortable than antique.Table set for fall with Mikasa Garden Harvest dishes, vintage amber Anchor Hocking glasses, a centerpiece with Beautyberry and Virginia Sweetspire and layered fall colored placemats and chargers.

Beautyberry

I have two varieties of Beautyberry growing in my yard.  I combined snippings of one variety with Virginia Sweetspire foliage also from my yard.  The Sweetspire is starting to turn and in the next few weeks will really put on a show of color.Centerpiece with Beautyberry and Virginia Sweetspire

A spring of Beautyberry adorns napkins on each plate.  This variety of Beautyberry is a more vibrant purple than the variety that I used in the table centerpiece.

Colors of Fall

I love traditional fall colors of amber, orange, yellow, and brown.  You won’t find neutral fall decor in my traditionally decorated southern home.Centerpiece with Virginia Sweetspire and Beautyberry on a table set for fall

It’s not that I don’t like neutral fall decor, I do, but colorful fall decor is my style. Table set for fall with Mikasa Garden Harvest dishes, vintage amber Anchor Hocking glasses, a centerpiece with Beautyberry and Virginia Sweetspire and layered fall colored placemats and chargers.

My hutch is decorated with vintage mixing bowls and my collection of yellow vintage pots.  Sometimes I change the yellow pots over to my collection of green ones.  It won’t be long before the shelves will display my vintage turkey platter and turkey collection.A table set for fall with a painted hutch filled with antique mixing bowls and a collection of yellow vintage flower pots

Last Look

I love setting a pretty table and got that love from both my mother and grandmother who both believed that the beauty of the table was as important as the food served when entertaining family or friends.Table set for fall with Mikasa Garden Harvest dishes, vintage amber Anchor Hocking glasses, a centerpiece with Beautyberry and Virginia Sweetspire and layered fall colored placemats and chargers.

  7. Very pretty table Paula. I do adore the Beautyberry and the way you laid them on each napkin. They are new to me. Purple is such a pretty color. How special to use your wedding dishes. They are timeless and so classic. The golden goblets are a nice touch.
a pretty and serene table for your guests to enjoy.

  8. Hi Paula! Oh, your tablescape is so pretty and I love your touch of blueberries! Now those golden glasses – I had those and through the years my children continued to break a glass here and there and now I don’t have any. They are so perfect for fall and with your tablescape. Hope you’re doing well.
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia 😉

    1. Two of my aunts had these glasses and I think that’s why I wanted them when I spotted them at an estate sale years ago. The amber color is great for fall. I also have a set of green glasses but don’t used them as often. Thank you so much for commenting! We’ve followed each other’s blogs for years.

  9. How have I never seen or been aware of Beautyberry?! It’s absolutely a stunner. As pretty as it is on your table, I’d love to see it growing in a landscape. The purple of the berries is a gorgeous combination with fall oranges and your fab vintage amber glasses.

  10. Paula, Thank you for introducing me to Beautyberry. The color is so vibrant it looks artificial! I had to look it up and saw that it’s an important food source for more than forty species of birds. I’ll have to find a local nursery that has it and plant some this fall. It’s so pretty presented on your napkin with your Mikasa Garden Harvest and in contrast to your amber glasses. So happy to be hopping with you this week. ♥

    1. Thank you, Mary! You should be able to find it a local nursery. I saw it for sale last weekend at a local farm supply store. I know that it grows in North Carolina because that’s where I first discovered it.

  13. I have never seen Beautyberry… I love it! Your fall table is simplistic and quite beautifully. I liked how you laid it simply on the napkin. Such an elegant touch.

I like the Amber glasses… I need some!

  14. Paula, I, too, had never heard of Beautyberry before, it looks beautiful on your table. I especially like the sprig of vibrant berries on your subtlety striped napkins. The amber stemware picks draws out the leaves on your placemat beautifully. Your breakfast room looks very warm and inviting. Very nice to hop with you!!!

    1. Thank you, Ann! I am so happy that I’m now a part of this tablescape group. All week I have so much enjoyed seeing how each person styled their table for fall.

      Paula

  15. I love the amber glassware! I just love that for Fall! I love the pops of purple! So lovely! Such a beautiful table! I love the history behind your flatware and that you still have the handwritten note! That is so special!

    1. I should have included a picture of the handwritten card that’s still in the silver box. It’s actually very pretty and the handwriting is as well.

      Paula

    1. Thank you, Cindy! I still like my 25 year old casual wedding china. I visited Replacements in NC last summer and it’s still on display and for sale in their showroom. It’s one of those patterns that people like and keep buying so Mikasa keeps making it.

      Paula

  16. How beautiful! I wasn’t familiar with beautyberry, but now I love it already!

Your table setting is so pretty with your weddng dishes, traditional fall color and pops of purple. Beautiful photography too!

Headed to PInterest now to check out images of beautyberry. Thanks for inspiring!

    1. Thank you, Amber! I first discovered Beautyberry when we were doing a tennis tournament on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. There were long breaks between matches and I took walks through the neighborhoods near the tennis facility and spotted this plant in the woods growing wild. I looked the plant up and once I knew what it was, I had to have it for my yard. I look forward to its vibrant purple berries each fall.

      Paula

  17. Thank you, Paula, for the introduction to beautyberry! It’s gorgeous, and the purple and green hues really pop in your vintage orange planter. I, too, enjoy the traditional colors of Fall. Your leaf placemats, amber glasses & burlap chargers against your natural wood table are a perfect color combination to welcome the season. I’m so happy to be hopping with you! Happy Fall!

  18. So many lovely tables. Such a variety Thx for sharing

Although I’ve had no success w beauty berry as a cutting (leaves wilt). I encourage people to grow this plant – heathy, resistant to the usual disease, fungi, etc,, and reliable bloomer ( or “berrier”)

    1. I had the same experience with Beautyberry. My arrangement didn’t last too long because of the leaves wilting. Outside, this plant looks so pretty and a bonus in my neck of the woods is that the deer tend to leave it alone.

      Paula

  19. I am not familiar with Beautyberry but it is really pretty and makes your table pop with those purple pods. I love how you incorporated so many vintage pieces to bring back memories even including the K-Mart place mats. I miss K-Mart. I agree with you and your hubby about new furniture!

    1. I used to find the best stuff at K-Mart, especially when Martha Stewart had a line there. I was sad when it closed.

Lovely centerpiece and I love the clean look of your table. What a delightful place to enjoy a fall meal.

  22. Your table is lovely. I must admit I hadn’t heard of beautyberries before, but they are lovely on your table, and they are the perfect addition to your lovely autumn table. The amber glassware is pretty too and it all comes together beautifully. Pinned! It’s a pleasure to be on the hop with you. Hugs!

  23. Such a pretty table! I have never seen beautyberry but I love how it looks. Thanks so much for sharing with us at the Happy Fall party. Pinned.
