Felt Flower Wreath for Summer

Our front door needed a new wreath for summer.  I wanted something colorful and fun and also something that I could make without having to buy any supplies.  I love what I created!

To make the wreath, I started by wrapping a straw wreath form in two inch strips of teal fabric used for the roman shade that I created for the upstairs bathroom that we are remodeling.  (This project is on hold until the the ceiling damaged by the storm is fixed.)

I crafted yellow and white flowers from scraps of felt leftover from crafting a wreath for a friend who cracked her favorite tennis racket.  She was thrilled to be able to use her old racket for a decoration.  I snapped a picture of it before I gave it to her.

To make these flowers, I folded leftover strips of white and yellow in half and used a bead of hot glue to hold the fabric in place.   Then I used my scissors to make snips along one edge.  Finally, I rolled and glued each strip to create a flower.  For a slightly different look, I glued two strips together, made snips with my scissors, and then rolled and glued to create the flower.  To make the flower look like a Dahlia, I cut triangle shapes into one side of the strip and then rolled and glued.

To make the gray flowers, I cut four 3” x 2” pieces of felt and then rounded off one side of each piece to resemble a petal.  I used thread and a long stitch length to sew the petals into a line and then gently pulled the thread to gather the edges into a flower shape.  A button created the flower center.

Our front door has glass at the top and it makes photographing a wreath difficult no matter what time of day I tried.

I love the pop of color that the combination of teal, yellow, white, and gray gives to the front door.

This wreath will be perfect to use until it’s time to change it out for fall.  Next up will be a new summer wreath for our kitchen door.  I’m still thinking about what I want to create for that area.

  6. I love that big sunflower! I’ve been on the lookout for something to hang in my office at Dish to add some color, so this will be perfect. I think it works for every season too, not to mention that sunflowers are my absolute favorite! I hope I can pull it off as well as you did. I’m the type of person that needs step by step instructions to complete anything. One time, I messed up cooking noodle because the instructions didn’t tell me when to put them in the pot. LOL! I usually have to get all my project ideas from HGTV or DIY network so I can record them and replay a step when my inevitable confusion sets it. Luckily, I have the Hopper DVR that comes with loads of recording space to house all my project shows. I am optimistic about this project though! Wish me luck. I’ll check back if I have any questions.
