Flour Sack Fall Inspired Pillow
As summer changes to fall, it’s time change our décor to go along with the season. An easy-to-make pillow crafted from inexpensive flour sack kitchen towels can make a great fall addition to your living room, bedroom, or porch.
My fall themed flour sack pillow combined with faux pumpkins, dried gourds, a wool throw, and a fall mat create a pretty vignette on my porch. This pillow is super easy to make. I’m looking forward to making a few more for different holidays.
How to Make a Flour Sack Pillow
Supplies Needed
2 Flour Sack Kitchen Towels
Iron-On Transfer Paper
Desired Images
Iron
Scissors
Thread
Ruler
Sewing Machine
Disappearing Ink Fabric Marker
Procedure
1. Find a fall image and save to a Word document, being sure to reverse the image, if necessary. I used images from The Graphics Fairy. Print images on transfer paper and cut out.
2. Wash, dry, and iron two flour sack kitchen towels. Since this material is thin, place one towel on top of the other and fold in half.
3. Iron on images to one side of folded towels.
4. Using a fabric marker that fades without washing, mark in 2 inches on the long edges and 4 inches on the short edges on the back side of the folded towel.
5. Mark an opening for stuffing with two pins.
6. Stitch on the lines being sure to leave an opening for stuffing.
7. Trim the edges 1 1/2 inches from the stitched line.
8. Stuff the pillow and stitch closed.
I’m getting in the fall mood just from looking at these pictures.
This project is perfect for a beginning seamstress and would make a nice gift. It would be fun to make a personalized pillow with a child’s picture for a grandparent gift or make a pillow with a pet’s picture for a friend or family member. I’m planning to make a version for Halloween, too!
