Mid-Century Coffee Table Makeover

Last summer I scored a mid-century coffee table at Goodwill.  I gave it a makeover that I loved.  I didn’t need this piece in my home and I’ve tried to sell it, but haven’t been successful.  Since it would not sell, I decided to give it a second makeover.

This is what this mid-century coffee table looked like before its first makeover:

It’s not fine furniture, it’s not even wood, with the exception of the legs.  If it were solid wood, I would not have considered painting it.  I wanted to give it a modern look,  so for its first makeover, I painted it with emerald green paint toned down with black chalk lime wax.  I loved the look!

I thought that a mid-century lover would discover this table in my shop or on Craigslist and snap it up.  It never happened, so I decided to give it a new makeover, this time with a more subtle paint color, black.

I’m loving it’s new all-black look, especially with the gold trimmed legs.

This would be a practical piece in a family or living room.  It is low to the ground making the top level the perfect height for drinks, remotes, and magazines.  The lower level offers space for storing books and magazines waiting to be read.

My ferns have been popping out like crazy in the last few weeks.  A few fronds in milk glass vases look pretty on this mid-century piece.Vintage milk glass vases with fern fronds

If you like this makeover, I would love it if you would  pin it to one of your boards on Pinterest for others to discover.  If you like furniture makeovers, be sure to check out my furniture board.

  1. It was a fun color before and looked pretty but now it looks very classy and rich! I love that you left the gold accents! I bet it will sell for sure! I hope you have an amazing day!

  2. Sometimes even a refresh needs a refresh. 🙂 Love the new color. It’s so sleek and elegant. I bet it’s gone to a new home by now. Thanks for linking to Friday’s Furniture Fix. Sharing out on social media. XO Susie from The Chelsea Project

  3. I’m liking the black! Sleek, modern, very cool 🙂 May I ask what paint process you used? You mentioned it wasn’t a real wood piece, so I’m curious to know how you got paint to stick.

    1. Hi, Melanie! The Velvet Finishes paint that I used didn’t need a primer and I had no trouble with it not sticking to the plastic-like surface. I just finished a desk with a laminate top (I’m posting it on Thursday) and I primed it with Zinnser 1-2-3 before painting it with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and the primer worked like a charm to get the paint to stick. Before I primed, I sanded the laminate to rough it up a bit.

  4. Oh I love this makeover! I loved the green too but I agree, the black suits it more. I almost want to buy it for my place but I’m not 100% if I want a coffee table in my living room….or if I want a storage ottoman instead. But this is so tempting and beautiful!
