Newport Trip :: Day One
We recently spent a long weekend in Newport, RI and had a marvelous time. If you like history, architecture, and the water, Newport is a destination you would love.
We hoped to escape the one hundred degree heat in Virginia, but Rhode Island ended up having similar temperatures. Fortunately, the heat wasn’t unpleasant at all because it wasn’t humid.
We stayed in the lovely Hotel Viking which is convenient to the water, mansions, and the Cliff Walk. The hotel has a beautiful flower filled entrance.
I fell in love with the décor of our room and insisted on photographing it before we messed it up with our things. I loved the wallpaper, curtains, and dark wall behind the bed.
I could spend a long time in this room!
After settling in, we took a walk to the harbor for a boat ride. We go boating frequently, but not on a sail boat, so this was a real treat.
This light house is now a bed and breakfast. It’s on an island and I can imagine that the experience of staying here would be the treat of a lifetime.
This home on a rock is accessible only by boat. Aren’t these owners lucky?
This is Jackie Bouvier Kennedy’s childhood summer retreat. It’s also where she and Jack were married. Life Magazine has great photos of the wedding if you are interested.
This was Jackie’s mother’s art studio and a playhouse for the children.
I love the sound that sails make in the wind.
Can you believe the size of this summer home?
A restaurant along the harbor decorated a privacy wall with oyster cans planted with herbs. While I was photographing it, a young man came out of the restaurant and asked if I liked this. When I said yes, he proudly told me that it was his idea and he had constructed it all on his own.
My next post will feature some of the Newport mansions that we toured. They are over the top fabulous!
Missed your Friday Fitness…but now I see why!! GORGEOUS photos!!
One of my favorite towns!! We visited a few years ago and fell in love with it. We had an amazing private tour of the “Breakers” mansion only because we signed up for the family tour and we were the only family there. It is something we will never forget! Can’t wait to see your next pictures!
Paula, it looks like you both had a wonderful time. I would love to visit that area. Your room is beautiful! Carla
what a beautiful room you stayed in. I have never been to RI but would like to now after seeing your pictures.
Paula, I love your last tour of New Port and I’m excited about this one too. I’ve only been there once and it was awhile ago so I’m lovin all your pictures.
I have never been to RI but so want to go for a visit. Looks absolutely fabulous.
Ohhh this brings back such wonderful memories. We lived at Ft Adams for a year while my husband was at the War College. Our quarters looked right out over Narragansett Bay. I took the harbor tour probably a hundred times, cause its where we went when company came to town. I worked for a year at The Breakers. It was wonderful to be able to see behind the scenes of these great “Cottages.” Weren’t the flowers to die for. Love, love Newport! Thanks for the memories.
Beautiful, beautiful pictures Paula! I enjoyed seeing where you visited! Your room was lovely too…and the picture of you and Mr. SP….the best of all! You two are quite the travelers this summer! 🙂

Truly lovely. We took a trip to upstate NY and stayed at a B&B and it was also beautiful. We did escape the heat and humidity, fell asleep with the windows open and it got down as low 50 degrees. Your oceanside pictures of the coast is dreamy. Look like you had a marvelous time!!
What an awesome trip, Paula! I love the room you stayed in. I’d love to have a home like one of those you pictured…as an everyday home.
