Red Hots Baked Apples
When I was growing up, my dad made red hots baked apples. He learned how to make them from his great-aunt who raised my grandmother and was a beloved grandmother to my dad.
How to Make Red Hots Baked Apples
This is a super simple side dish that is very tasty.
Ingredients
- Apples – I used Fuji apples but Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Rome are other good choices.
- Red Hots
- Water – Optional
Instructions
Peel and slice apples and place in a greased baking dish and top with Red Hots.
Neither Mama nor I could remember if Daddy added water to the apples.
The first time I made this dish, I added 1 cup of water and it resulted in apples this a light touch of cinnamon flavor. The second time I made them, I used 1/2 cup of water and the apples were perfect. If you want your apples super hot and cinnamony, use no water.
Bake for 45 minutes at 350 degrees, stirring the dish a few times to make sure the Red Hots melt evenly.
I loved this dish growing up and am glad that I finally made it to enjoy.

Thank you so much, Shelley!
Wow I never heard of this. I love red hots but with apples I bet it great. Pinned to try!
Thank you so much, Cindy!
I had a sister in law who used to make something like this but also a hot drink with red hots. She passed away several years ago and no one has the recipe.
Check out Leslie from Feet Under My Table for a drink with red hots.
My mother in law always made this for Christmas! She always dissolved her red hots so you didn’t see them…we still make red hot cinnamon apple juice that I have on my blog! A favorite! Thanks for sharing and bringing this back to mind. Love recipes that bring back favorite memories.❤️❤️❤️
Dissolving the red hots is a great idea and your red hot apple juice sounds so good.
I’ve never heard of baking red hots with apples before. It totally makes sense! I pinned it to try!
I hope you enjoy this dish as much as we do.
We make something similar but use applesauce and red jello to dissolve the red hots and then refiegerate so it forms somewhat of a solid – this is staple at Christmas Thanksgiving and Easter
That sounds delicious!
Get out! I’ve never heard of these!! Very cool!
They are so good. I hope you try this recipe.
My aunt used to make this! It was delicious! Thanks for bringing it back to my attention.
You are quite welcome! If you make it, I hope you enjoy.
I can’t imagine what this tastes like because I’ve never heard of red hots before. I assume that they are a spicy candy. I don’t think we have anything like that in NZ.
They used to be sold everywhere here. The only place I could find them in my town was Kroger.
I’m totally making this.
I hope you enjoy it!
What a fun recipe. Paula!
Thank you so much, Linda!
I can practically smell the cinnamon wafting through my house. What a cool recipe! Perfect for the holidays!
Thank you so much, Stacey!
I’ve melted red hots into apple cider before, and it was great. I bet this is, too. Pinned.
I must try this idea!
Wow, what a unique recipe! Thanks Paula! Pinning!
Thank you so much, Cindy!
Will have to try this method. I make mine in a large frying pan. Put in the cut up apples, sprinkle on a bag of the red hots, and then cut up one stick of butter and place on top of the red hots. Cook on low, with the pan covered. Once the butter and candy melt, stir once or twice. I do not add water. I always serve with a pork dish. The house will smell heavenly!
Thank you so much for telling me how you make this dish. I am going to try your method the next time I make this dish.
What a great recipe! I would never have dreamed of putting those two together!!!
It is so simple and so good!
