Sloppy Joes
Did you grow up eating Sloppy Joes? I remember loving this sandwich as a child, but I can’t remember the last time I made them (if ever). I ran across my aunt’s recipe and decided that this would make a perfect Sunday night supper for us.
Sloppy Joes
1 lb hamburger
4 T diced onion
1 T green pepper
3/4 c. water
1 c catsup
2 T dry mustard
1 T lemon juice
1 tsp celery seed
1 tsp vinegar
2 T brown sugar
Salt and pepper to taste
Brown hamburger, onion, and green pepper. Drain, if necessary. Add water, catsup, and other seasonings. Cook until thick. Serve on toasted buns.
I wrote this recipe down as a teen thinking that I’d want to make it when I was grown. I like it as much now as I did then. Yum!
Hamburger in a sweet and flavorful sauce is so good served on a bun as a sandwich. Sloppy Joes make an easy weeknight meal.Sloppy Joes

I do like a good sloppy Joe – – – I liked the silly “slop, slop, sloppy Joe” song too!
I had FORGOTTEN this – – – in these here parts they call sloppy joes barbeque. Having lived in the SOUTH where I learned what REAL barbeque is, I now have to giggle every time someone says something about barbeques up here and I REALIZE they MEAN sloppy joes!
Have a great day, Paula!
I made sloppy joes last night with a can of manwich that was in my pantry from a while ago…yuck! I’ll never bother making it from a can again! I’ve tried several different recipes; maybe I’ll give yours a try next.
I don’t think I’ve ever made Sloppy Joes, but I know my mom did. I’ll have to give this one a try…I’m in a real dinner rut lately.
Yup, I grew up on sloppy joe’s and make them from time to time. I’ll give this recipe a try next time. Also used to get something called a “neat joe” at the antique fair food booth that we have in the summer. It was served in a tube like bread thing and was a lot more neat to eat.
those look so yummy! Definitely going to make these soon.
xoxo.
Paula, I did grow up on sloppy joes! Your post made me want one right now! Carla
Yep, that sound wonderful. I’m sure you’re happy you have it now. I will have to try this recipe. Thanks for sharing it.
Kathleen – I’ve made this for years and years and we love it. We are big eaters so I always double the recipe so that I’ll have leftovers.
