Summer Reading: Part II

One of my favorite things about summer is having time to read for pleasure.  During the school year I rarely have the energy at night to read anything other than a magazine.  A few weeks ago I did a  summer reading post highlighting a few books that I was looking forward to reading: The Island by Elin Hilderbrand; Lowcountry Summer by Dorothea Benton Frank; and Gone With a Handsomer Man by Michael Lee West.

I plowed through Lowcountry Summer and Gone with a Handsomer Man and then discovered the Pretty Little Liars Series.  I’ve been averaging almost one a day of these books and am on the last one.  Yes, I’m 42 years old and love these books geared to teens.

Have you seen the show on ABC Family?  I started watching it this spring after my sister- in-law told me about it.   I hadn’t read the books then and was pretty confused about the plot.  Now that I’ve almost finished book eight, I understand the show and will definitely set my DVR to record it.
As much as I enjoyed these eight books, I’m ready for an adult book.  Next will be The Island and after that Holly Blues by Susan Wittig Albert.  Holly Blues is a mystery set in Texas where the main character, China Bales, runs an herb shop and is constantly investigating a murder.

What’s next on your reading list?

  1. Hi Paula, I started watching Pretty Little Liars with my 15 year old last year- I didn’t plan that, but it is kind of an addicting show! My daughter texts her friends who are also watching the show, so I have to wait until commercials before I can talk- now that’s an interesting reversal of roles!

I know what you mean about not having time/energy for much reading during the school year. I have an Adrian Mole book and a number of other ones I can’t wait to start reading!

I love the name of your blog- I call my kids ‘sweet pea’!

  2. I think I just may take drive B&N on my lunch break! I love mysteries. Holly Blues sounds really good. Thanks for sharing 🙂

  3. I don’t even know about that show but maybe I need to check it out. 🙂 But, another teenage type show that I enjoyed was The Hills. It was on MTV and I think you can watch the whole series from their website. At least they had it up a while ago. Or you can probably get it from Netflix if you have that.

  4. Don’t feel bad–I sometimes like teen stuff too…huge huge fan of The Hunger Games series, and I can’t wait for the movie. 🙂

  5. Do you know, I just LOVE juvenile literature! I pull out a book for girls from time and time and just relish it. Somehow reading these books makes me feel that all’s right with the world. My favorites? The Anne of Green Gables books (of course!). Less complex and classic but still great fun: the Trixie Belden books, the Cherry Ames books, and the Beany Malone books. Have you ever read any of those?

  6. Paula, I’m glad you get to enjoy some relaxing days in the summer with reading. You deserve it after teaching all winter.

I keep looking through my stash of books trying to decide what I want to read. Truth is I spend too much time reading blogs. ;-]

  7. I’ve only see Pretty Little Liars once. I’ve heard it’s really good though. I do watch some teen shows (Secret Life of an American Teenager) and Hubby gives me a hard time.

I’m reading Nicholas Sparks right now. I’m only half way through in two weeks. That’s just sad. I wish I had more time to read. That Holly Blues book sounds good. I might have to pick it up IF I ever finish my current book.
