Thanksgiving Place Setting Ideas
October has flown by and the calendar will soon change to November when we start to plan for one of my favorite days of the year, Thanksgiving. Today you’ll see how I set a table for Thanksgiving and get Thanksgiving Place Setting Ideas from a fabulous group of blogging friends.
This year I am especially thankful as I have lived with with lung cancer for going on three years. I hardly mention my cancer on my blog but it’s there and it’s a constant worry and uncertainty in my life. This gal is grateful to be celebrating Thanksgiving again this year.

Thanksgiving Place Setting Ideas
Today’s Thanksgiving Place Setting Ideas is a Pinterest challenge that I’m sharing along with a group of blogging friends. This is a monthly challenge hosted by Cindy from County Road 407. Each month Cindy picks a picture from Pinterest and challenges our group to recreate the look.
Last month our group created Fall Tablescapes and I got so many decorating ideas from the ladies who participated.
Many thanks to Cindy for hosting this challenge!
If you arrived here from Decorate and More with Tip, welcome! I’m sure that you enjoyed seeing Terrie’s Thanksgiving table. You’ll find a list of all of the participating bloggers at the end of this post. I’m looking forward to seeing how everyone recreated this look.
Our Inspiration for this Challenge
This month we were challenged to create a Thanksgiving Place Setting inspired by this Simple and Elegant Thanksgiving Place Setting designed by Lindsay Brunk.
I liked that this was a relatively simple place setting with a plain napkin and solid colored tablecloth, simple silverware, a pretty place card, and a beautiful fall themed centerpiece.
I’ll have to admit that this challenge had me stumped because I had a feeling that the other ladies would create beautiful printable place cards for their readers and I don’t know how to do that. I finally gave up on the idea of making a place card and went shopping at the Caspari store in Charlottesville where I found pretty much exactly the place cards that I wanted to make. I picked up a package of Caspari napkins and I was ready to set my table for Thanksgiving.
My Thanksgiving Table
First things first, I’ve only hosted Thanksgiving one time and that’s because my mother’s stove quit working and she was forced to move her Thanksgiving dinner operation to my house. She came with everything made, she just needed my oven. My mother is a great cook and we all look forward to Thanksgiving dinner at her house each year.
Even though my table won’t be used for Thanksgiving Day, I enjoy setting a pretty table and admire it every time I walk through our dining room. We’ve had several guests over recently and they enjoyed looking at my table as well. Even Sherman’s acupuncturist who treats Sherman monthly admire my table before she started poking Sherman with needles.
My Version of the Inspiration Picture
You’ll notice that my table isn’t much like the inspiration picture. What I did include that the inspiration picture has is a table centerpiece, silverware with gold accents, and place cards.
What I didn’t include is a tablecloth and cloth napkins, wheat at each place setting, or a centerpiece with Eucalyptus.
I love using a tablecloth for a formal meal but decided to use place mats instead because I like how they look with my china. Also, I know I have tablecloths that fit this table because my mom gave them to me when she gave me the table, but they are buried in our attic crawlspace, and I didn’t want to have to destroy an upstairs bedroom by pulling out countless crates to locate them.
For my table, I set it with my wedding china and silverware along with vintage turkeys from my collection and elegant turkey place cards from Caspari.
My centerpiece was already in place, a DIY wood box filled with pumpkins, faux Bittersweet, and Sweet Gum seed pods.
Turkeys and Place Cards
For my table, each Thanksgiving place setting has a turkey place card and turkeys from my collection.
I love the Caspari turkey place cards that I found at the Caspari store in Charlottesville. They come eight to a package and cost just $4.50. You can also get them from Amazon but they come in a package of sixteen.
I knew I wanted my place cards to include a vintage looking turkey and I was thrilled with the Caspari store had exactly what I had in mind. The two vintage turkey candles beside my place card were purchased at an antique store long ago.
My mom’s place setting has male and female turkey salt and pepper shaker.
My father-in-law’s place has a beeswax turkey purchased about 20 years ago from Beeswax Candle Company in my town.
My husband’s place has another beeswax turkey from the same local shop.
Each Place Setting
Our inspiration picture used cloth napkins but when I saw these antique gold paper napkins at the Caspari store, I knew that they would look good with my Lenox Autumn dishes, so I used them instead of cloth napkins.
I picked my china out when I was still in high school. Every time my mom and I went to the mall to shop, we went to the china department in the department stores to admire the china.
The colors and fruit motif of this Lenox Autumn pattern make it a good pattern to use for Thanksgiving.
My silverware is my wedding silverware, Gorham Ribbon Edge.
My crystal was my grandmother’s as were the placemats.
Even though my table won’t be used for Thanksgiving, I’m hoping that my mother will want to use these place cards on her table. I’ll use the extra cards in the package for Mama’s additional Thanksgiving guests.
Final Thoughts
We never dine in our dining room now that we have a second table and an eating area in our kitchen. That table is larger and the chairs around it are comfortable. This table is an antique that my paternal grandfather bought, refinished, and then gave to my parents. The chairs around it belonged to my maternal great-grandmother. They are pretty but aren’t especially comfortable to sit on.
My grandmother’s cousin’s wife painted the tray as a gift for my grandmother long ago. I always admired it in her home and she let me have it when she moved to a retirement home.
I bought my buffet at an auction long ago. The candles on the buffet have a relief of maple leaves and I purchased them at the same local shop where I got the turkey candles long ago. You can read more about the painting on the buffet in my Decorating with Vintage for Fall post.
Many thanks to Lindsay Brunk for this month’s Pinterest challenge inspiration. I enjoyed this Thanksgiving place setting challenge and had so much fun creating my own version which 100% reflects my style.
Next on the tour is my dear friend Julie from My Wee Abode. Julie is a master at creating printables and you are going to not only find printable place cards that you can print for free, but get great ideas for using them in her post.

Hi Paula
Stopping by the Pinterest challenge. I love the backstory to the dining room table and chairs and the linens.
laura
Thank you, Laura! Both of my grandmothers grew up in the depression and because of that, saved everything. As a result, I have a lot of family treasures to use for my decor. Looking forward to seeing your tablescape!
Paula
After spending 3 hours yesterday creating Halloween place cards I think those turkey place cards are just about perfect! LOL I adore your collection of turkeys. Such a fun table!
Thank you, Laura! I knew that creating my place cards would require a lot of time and research to figure out how to do it. Finding exactly what I had in mind at the Caspari store was a lucky break. Looking forward to seeing your tablescape today!
Paula
I love your beautiful table and chairs and so enjoyed the story behind them. You did a fabulous job of choosing china, it truly is a beautiful pattern and makes a stunning tablesetting. Such a unique and fun idea to use some of your turkey collection at each plate.
Thank you, Marty!
Paula
Love, love, love your adorable vintage turkeys, Paula! They are perfect to enjoy at each place setting. And you can never go wrong with Caspari anything; love their products. What a fun table to pass by and enjoy each day. Celebrating your health with you this Thanksgiving, friend!
Thank you, Lora! I have a lot to be thankful for this year.
Paula
What a pretty table, Paula! Even though you are not hosting Thanksgiving, it’s always nice to have a festive table set. I am so happy to hear your good health news. So much to be thankful for!
Cheers!
Shelley
Yes, Shelley! Very grateful to be here for another holiday season.
Paula
Paula I just love your table and how you have it set for family and friends to sit around visiting. It’s always a great feeling to celebrate a healthy life and a happy one. Have a great Thanksgiving Paula.
Thank you, Terrie!
Paula
Poor Sherman. I hate that he has to get that done but I know he probably loves how he feels later. He’s so handsome.
And I totally get why you don’t use that table and chairs. Old stuff is made well but not that comfy. Love your 100% Paula version of the challenge. It’s beautiful and I love that everyone has their own turkey. Thank you for joining in!
Thank you, Cindy! Sherman doesn’t mind the acupuncture at all. The vet and I both pet him the entire time and he focuses on that. I really don’t know if it helps his leg but it doesn’t hurt it, so we keep doing it. Some days I want to ask her to stick me with a few of her magic needles. 🙂
Paula
Autumn is my wedding china too. It is gorgeous in your dining room. I love your turkey collection.
What fun that we have the same china pattern. I like that it has so many colors in it that you can accent when picking out a tablecloth, napkins, or placemats.
Paula
Your table is amazing! That china set was the print my former husband had chosen when we were shopping on our registry. Too funny! It’s a lovely print, but, as you know, I’m more of a coastal girl… so I told him ‘nope’. Now that he’s my former, I’m glad I nixed it! LOL! Thank you for sharing all your lovely ideas, and your vintage pieces and history! That stemware is gorgeous, and your tablescape is perfect!
Thank you so much, Julie! It’s funny that your ex chose Lenox Autumn. Dave had no say in my wedding choices, I had most of what I wanted picked out long before I met him. 🙂
Paula
Yeah… my former had a lot to say about the wedding… one of my ‘red flags’. LOL! (However, I did get what *I* wanted for my wedding. 😉 )
Your turkey place cards are perfect, Paula! They coordinate so well with those sweet salt and pepper shakers. I also love your Lenox china. The colors on the plates are spectacular and really make for a vibrant place setting. There’s always a cozy comfort to your vintage decor that makes me sentimental. Also, I wanted to say how sorry I am to hear about your cancer. I had no idea, and I know it must be a heavy burden. I’m glad you have this outlet to bring you (and many others) joy. Happy Thanksgiving (a little early)!
Thank you for your kind words, Chrissy!
Paula
Your Thanksgiving table is beautiful, Paula! I love the the story of the table and chairs along with your collection of turkeys at each place setting!
Thank you so much, Lynne! I can’t believe that we aren’t that far from celebrating Thanksgiving.
Paula
Hi Paula! Your table is festive and perfect for your style! I’m loving your turkey place cards and your little ceramic turkeys fit beautifully with it too! Pinned to my Thanksgiving ideas board!
Thank you, Wendi!
Paula
Thank you for sharing your beautiful setting on your oak table. I have my grandmother’s oak round table, buffet/sideboard, and china cabinet,, so you have inspired me!
I am so glad that I inspired you. Oak is “out” decor wise but I never stopped loving it. I’ll take an antique any day over something new.
Paula
Oh how I love your vintage turkeys, Paula! The Caspari place cards go so well with them. I also have a vintage turkey candle that I never light but use as decor at Thanksgiving. Your grandmother’s linen placemats and crystal goblets are lovely. I love how you always incorporate sentimental items into your decor. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving at your mom’s house!
Thank you, Rebecca! I love my vintage turkeys!
Paula
So very pretty, Paula! I’m so glad that you are doing well health-wise, too!
Thank you! Getting some good news from the doctor was a real blessing.
Paula
So very pretty! Your china is just perfect for fall. Like you…we don’t get to use our table on the big day, but I love having it looking festive!
Thank you, Christy! One thing that I like about my china is that there are so many colors in it that I can accent with placemats, napkins, or a tablecloth.
Paula
I remember seeing your wedding china as we were getting ready to marry (October 1987) and it very pretty with the floral border, Paula! So pretty with your grandparents’ glassware, placemats and everything!!! A wonderful way to keep family members close. 💞 On a more serious note, I didn’t know you had lung cancer. 💕🐿 My Mom had a good oncologist but I am sure the treatments today are even better! I am glad you are feeling well. ☺️💕 Prayers for you and your family for a wonderful Thanksgiving together.
Happy fall hugs,
Barb 💕
Thank you, Barbara! 25 years later, I love my Autumn china as much now as I did in 1994 when I selected it and in the 80’s when my mom and I would admire it in the china department at Leggett.
I am sorry that your mother had lung cancer. My dad died from it in 1997. Modern medicine is keeping me alive and I need for research to keep advancing.
I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family!
Paula
This is so absolutley gorgeous Paula! I love your turkeys! Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and I love traditional look of your table. Those plates are some of the most beautiful vintage dishes ever! Beautiful photos!
I featured you at this past week’s TFT. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for featuring me, Amber! I also LOVE Thanksgiving.
