In our town, a local favorite bar and grill is The Cavalier Store, known by locals simply as “The Cav.” Mr. SP ate many evening meals at the bar shown below before he met me. The Cav has the best seasoned thick-cut fries that you’ll ever taste and for bar food, it is pretty tasty.

The interior is decorated with local pennants and donated license plates. The tables and booths are carved with initials and unfortunately in recent years, scribbled over in Sharpie graffiti. There’s a lot to look at while you wait for your food.
I couldn’t count how many meals we’ve eaten here. One of our favorite sandwiches at The Cav is a grilled turkey reuben. After eating my first one at The Cav back in 1993, I created my own version that we enjoy at home that makes a quick and easy dinner and is certainly a bit more healthy than the usual reuben made with corned beef.

Turkey Rueben
Ingredients:
Rye bread
Deli turkey slices
Swiss cheese
Sauerkraut
Thousand Island salad dressing
Spray butter or regular butter
A nonstick skillet or regular skillet will work just fine for making these sandwiches but I typically use my grill and waffle maker. (affiliate link)
Directions:
1. Butter one side of each bread slice. Turn one slice butter side down.
2. On the butter side down slice, layer turkey, cheese, sauerkraut, and Thousand Island dressing.
3. Put the other slice of bread on top, butter side up.
4. Grill and enjoy!
A little mustard might be a good addition to this sandwich. Next time I’ll add that.
What do you think? Is this something that you might enjoy?

Well, that’s just the craziest thing! I looked at your waffle maker and thought to myself, “That looks just like mine!” But I never realized it was also a grill! Sure enough I just checked and the plates reverse to a grill! I can’t believe I never noticed it! Mine was also a wedding present back in the 90’s. Looks like we’ll be having grilled sandwiches today! 🙂
My ancient Sears waffle iron (which weights a ton) is also a griddle. This sandwich is making me hungry.
The age of the waffle iron makes me digress a bit. We recently cleaned out my Mom’s home and when I saw her iron no lightweight itself), I thought about the 3 I have at home which do not get hot enough. There must be some kind of government control on that. Anyway I brought hers home and it’s amazing the difference it makes. Now, I rarely iron anthing, but when I do I want it flat with no wrinkles. Maybe I’ll post about this.

Paula – I also have a B&D waffle iron that I use to make paninis…. it’s almost exactly like yours, it was a wedding present in 1990!

That place looks like my kind of place!
I’m not a fan of sauerkraut, but I think my Hubby would love this! He likes everything in it.
I gotta find my sandwich press thing. Thanks for the reminder.
I’ll be right over Paula, Rubens of any sort are one of my favorite sandwiches.
